First Steps

Get started with OpenInvoice - Create your account and configure basic settings

Creating Your Account

1. Sign Up

  1. Navigate to your OpenInvoice instance (typically http://localhost:3000 in development)
  2. Click Sign Up or navigate to /auth/sign-up
  3. Enter your email address and create a password
  4. Verify your email if required by your Clerk configuration

2. Create or Join a Workspace

After signing up, you'll be prompted to:

  • Create a new workspace - For personal use or to start a new organization
  • Join an existing workspace - If you've been invited by a team member

Workspaces allow you to organize invoices, customers, and team members. You can switch between workspaces at any time.

Initial Setup

1. Configure Company Branding

Set up your company information:

  1. Go to SettingsBranding
  2. Upload your company logo
  3. Set your brand colors (primary and secondary)
  4. Add company contact information:
    • Company name
    • Address
    • Phone number
    • Email
    • Website
  5. Set your default currency
  6. Customize footer text (optional)

This information will appear on all your invoices.

2. Set Up Payment Processing (Optional)

To accept online payments:

  1. Go to SettingsPayments
  2. Connect your Stripe account (see Stripe Connect Setup)
  3. Configure payment settings

3. Configure Tax Settings (Optional)

Set up tax calculation:

  1. Go to SettingsTax (if available)
  2. Choose between:
    • TaxJar - Automatic tax calculation (requires API key)
    • Custom Tax Profiles - Manual tax configuration
  3. Set your default tax profile

Create Your First Invoice

Now you're ready to create your first invoice:

  1. Go to InvoicesNew Invoice
  2. Select a customer (or create one on the fly)
  3. Add line items (products or services)
  4. Set invoice date and due date
  5. Review totals and tax
  6. Click Save or Save & Send

Quick Tips

  • Use the Command Palette: Press Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows/Linux) to quickly navigate and perform actions
  • Keyboard Shortcuts: Most pages have keyboard shortcuts - look for hints in the UI
  • Dashboard Overview: Check the Overview page for quick insights into your business
  • Kanban Board: Use the Kanban board for visual invoice workflow management
